About Program – IISc Bangalore Research Internship Opportunity 2026

Applications are open for Summer (May–August) 2026 internships at the Distributed Systems Research group. Students with an outstanding academic background who can spend at least 12 weeks working in person at CNI during Summer 2026 are encouraged to apply.

Selected interns will work on one of the following areas:

Energy-efficient computing for machine learning model training and inference.
Distributed machine learning across heterogeneous computing environments.
Network transport protocols designed for data center workloads.

Internship Type: Full-time, in-person internship
Compensation: Paid internship opportunity
Accommodation: On-campus accommodation is not provided for interns
Alternative Stay: Safe paying guest (PG) accommodation is available near the IISc campus

Responsibilities:-

Assist in designing, developing, and performing experiments on research testbeds.
Use quantitative analysis and data modeling methods to analyze and interpret research data.
Support the creation and evaluation of software tools, models, and algorithms as part of the research work.

Information	Description
Scope of Work	This program does not focus on building ML/AI applications or applying machine learning models.
Research Focus	The work mainly involves core systems and networking, including infrastructure that supports computing and distributed environments.
Technical Requirement	Applicants should have practical experience in setting up or modifying Linux/Unix operating systems.
Knowledge Requirement	A strong understanding of operating systems, computer architecture, and computer networks is required.
Shortlisting Criteria	Candidates will be shortlisted only if they provide proof of their work, such as a GitHub repository, project URLs, open-source contributions, or peer-reviewed research publications.

Requirement	Details
Academic Background	Undergraduate or graduate students from Computer Science, Electrical Communication, or related engineering disciplines are eligible.
Operating System Skills	Strong proficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems and the command-line interface (CLI) is required.
Programming Skills	Good knowledge of data structures and algorithms, along with programming experience in C/C++ and Python.
Development Tools	Familiarity with software development tools such as debuggers, Git, and profilers.
